Gerrard set to join Doncaster Rovers as a GK Coach

Did anyone think he was good? Personally I thought he was ****e, always off his line and a really dodgy keeper. Prefered Thomas Myhre loads more...

Sky Sports said:
Oldham goalkeeping coach Paul Gerrard is set to be reunited with former boss Paul Dickov at Doncaster, the League One club have announced.

Although Rovers are yet to officially confirm the move, Gerrard's prospective switch to the Keepmoat Stadium has been widely reported since Dickov was handed the reins with the Championship newboys last month.

Gerrard played for Latics between 1991 and 1996 and joined their staff three years ago, serving as joint-caretaker manager alongside Tony Philliskirk in the wake of Dickov's January departure.

He had a knack of making good saves that went directly to the opponents striker.

His best game for us was when we got beat 4-1 away at Newcastle. Sums him up really.

Quality as a player bears little relation to the quality as a coach.

Not strictly true.

The type of player and how they develop has a great influence on how they perform as a coach. I remember our Bobby Martin saying that some of the worst coaches were the most naturally gifted players, this is because they don't really think about how to do things, they just do it. They can't explain when someone else can't do something they find natural. The best coaches are often those who analysed aspects of their game as players and improved them as their career progressed.

A lot of the stuff that made Gerrard rubbish were basics. Not to do with reflexes or skill (which I seem to recall were ok), but the positioning and reading of the game. He was rubbish when he arrived with us and rubbish when he left. I can't see him being a good enough coach for Everton.

On a side note, I think Jags would be an amazing defensive coach when he retires.

There was a game at home when he conceded a few goals in a short space of time and everyone started chanting "Simmo Simmo Simmo" he wasn't bad as back up to Southall and Myhre but was better than Simonsen. God we was sh1t back then.

An ability to analyse the game, spot defects in technique & plan training sessions to correct them is more important. Anybody, regardless of natural ability, can have this.

johan Cruyff was a great player and built a great side. Mourinho was a crap player and built a great side.

Paul Gerrard isn't going to be coaching people to be Paul Gerrard.

One of the poorest keepers we ever had, simple. Simonsen too. Myhre went to the dogs near the end but was better.

Its probably to do with Dickov wanting people hes had a working relationship with, under him but I would have thought Neil Sullivan would have been a better choice. Maybe he's not interested in being a player/coach for them though, or not given chance.

he had a decent spell I recall, but overall he was pretty rubbish. Although as a team we were terrible so he probably had more to do than your average keeper
