Its obviously pretty messed up that your own bank is doing this to its customers. Its shocking but you have to take some of the blame yourself really.

Don't you have online banking ? an app on your phone that you can easily and quickly look up at your own convenience.

I have notifications set up on my bank app that notifies me if my account dips below X amount and likewise when my account goes above X amount. You have to keep on top of things and keep things in order. Being in control of your own money mate.

Seeing some of the "clumsy thumbs" posts on here sometime, Mobile banking would terrify me!

It sounds like you have got into a cycle of charges (charges being taken resulting in further charge) The bank are able to help you out with the charges if you are in financial difficulty (charges are hindering you paying for essentials, rent, food ect)

The financial ombudsman may not be able to help if the bank have adheared to the terms and conditions of your account.

Basically the bank waived the charge before it debited your account. If you bank with the bank i think you bank with, they will notify you (online/paper statement) that you have been charged during your previous statement period, then the charge will be taken 22 days after that period. They have waived the charge before it has been taken, meaning nothing will go back into your account, as it hasnt been taken, if that makes sense.

They never notified me, in fact they are aware they sent me a statement despite the fact there is a block on the account for post so therefore they never informed me. the question is what they waived and why considering they still charged me and i hadnt spoke to them!

Personally not saying poor me, its the way they have gone about it and the massive charges that have resulted from the way they go about things that has caused the problem. I dont have online banking because they never sent me the information and personally have lived without it so far. Same as telephone banking, never got set up with that. So probably my fault that has happened at the end of the day, but where do you factor in the other 300 pound and more of charges before i will officially be in debt with the bank. basically that is where it will end up, i'll get my wages put elsewhere next month, they take nearly 300 from me and then i have to go back to them and arrange to pay the amount that they have took from me to begin with, that i wouldn't owe if it was not for them wanting so much as a result of them taking a huge amount anyway. Normally never had an issue with money, in fact apart from the DD on the wrong date, the other came from me lending like nearly 200 quid to the inlaws for xmas and waiting for it to come back! Neither here nor there but there you go.

Look i'm not trying to be all omg poor me sort of thing, i am trying to explain stuff genuinely here and i really appreciate some of the feedback i have got. I will certainly go and speak to the manager at the weekend at my local branch and try to talk to them because as it stands it is ridiculous to take so much off one customer in such a short case of time.

No no no i wasn't giving you a hard time at all mate......

Ive already said and you've pointed out, that basically your bank is horrendous. Its shocking they are like this with their own customers.

Seriously though, mobile banking and having an app to your bank is the way to go these days. Its password protected and you have your account at your finger tips at all times. Its all for an easier peace of mind and being in control of your finances at all times, 24 hours a day.

If your bank doesn't have this option, i would suggest paying off your dues with your current bank and find a more suitable one with these options in the future mate.

There will be a return mail block on the account(this could be for multiple reasons) unfortunatly the bank wont accept that as a reason to refund charges, as they will claim you have to take responsibility for your account (when d/d are taken, ingoings/outgoings ect)

The bank also will not normally touch a charge when a d/d has caused the error, the company will have to put the request through to the bank for the funds, meaning either customer or company is at error, you will normally be told to call the company who have requested the funds if they have taken it on an incorrect date, and take it up with them and their complaints procedure.

Im not sticking up for the bank, i have previously worked for the bank who is charging you (judging by the information you have given) so i know how they work.

Have you called the call centre? You are in your right to have a complaint logged and escalated if you feel the bank has made an error. The branch are not normally the best people to speak to regarding charges in my opinion. This is the only advice i could give, the ombudsman wont be able to help you until you have logged the complaint with the bank, and unfortunatly if the bank have followed terms and conditions it will be thrown out.

As mentioned in my other post, if the charges are hindering paying for essentials they could send a case off to a financial difficulties area and have the account looked into, at a last resort (although it may impact credit rating).

See the whole thing is not a mistkae on the banks part. They have charged me for reasons X,Y and Z. Its the way they have charged me, increasing the charges when they themselves put the account into arrears then asking for even more money because of it. Hell even the advice of get into the debt before they help me, when they already know they will cause the debt to begin with is almost criminal to suggest and surely grounds for complaint alone.

I agree, what they have advised is confusing. As far as im aware the account can be placed into collections if you are £100.00 or more over your arranged overdraft. Which is maybe the reasoning behind what you have been advised (although it is still a confusing piece of advice) I also beleive that once in collections they may help with future charges that are due to be taken, an example would be waiving charges until a specific date until the account is back up and running and all in order.

With regards to you going overdrawn, unfortunatly this is the case. An account can go overdrawn even without the funds in place.

If you feel you have been treated unfairly or misadvised then you could log a complaint, and if you dont get a resoloution that is accedptable to you, then you could have that escalated. I dont know how far you will get with the reversal of charges though.

You could take the nuclear option mate, and go in there on Saturday with a pair of your Ma's tights on your head and a piece of lead pipe in an old Adidas bag. That'll learn 'em.

If you get no joy on the call centre suggest you write a letter of complaint and then you have your grievance in writing if you go to the Ombusmen.

Include in it a clear timeline of events for each transaction eg date, balance of account , attempted transaction, fee charged/waived & fee reason and notification given you at each date if any. Then state what you think the bank did wrong ,either at each point or in general, and what you feel is a fair recompense and by what date it should be paid.

Might be worth sketching some of this down before you call so you don't forget anything which is easy to do when you are on the phone.

Since the person you are talking/writing to is rarely the person who made the cock up in the first place it is best sticking to the facts rather than giving in to understandable urge to yell/insult ie assertive vs aggressive. Depending on the organisation, customer complaint people sometimes have a degree of flexibility on how they handle problems so you are better getting them on your side vs alienating them.

Good luck and if you have the time stick at it. Most people give up early but after a certain amount of work talking/writing to you it can be cheaper for companies to pay you off than have the further drain on their resources.
