I`ve just been hit with a bill for £1500, for over payment of child tax credits. Due to the missus getting a promotion last year, her pay rise took us over the threshold for receiving the payment.
Apparently we should`ve told them, so it`s our fault !!!!.

It`s come at a bad time ( as it always does - car needs an mot / service, family holiday etc soon ).

Does anyone know if I they`ll agree to us paying it off in manageable instalments ?.

* They won`t accept sawdust, rubbing a magnet over the forms won`t make it go away and putting the forms in the freezer won`t make it go away either ;)

Pretty sure manageable payments can be negotiated.

HMRC do if you have cocked up a tax return.

When it happened to an ex of mine they just basically took the next years payment to pay it off, that was a few years ago though, best giving them a ring (a wait on hold for a week)

They recalculate mine constantly.
I keep all the letters, so that it if ever did go to court etc. then it shows how confusing they are.
Time a phone call right, Sunday afternoon usually good, and they can be quite helpful mate.
Good luck.

Think they’ll take your family allowance as payment.

Do you still receive payments? They’ll generally take reductions from that. Do you have a gateway account? You can apply for reduced reductions through that online. It’s an extremely common problem. If not offer £5 a week or something. Depends how much surplus income you have. They may require a full financial statement. They generally don’t pursue these debts too hard mind.

Cheers mate.

Payments have now stopped and there is no way in this world that I`m letting them near my personal finances !!!!!!

Best to get on the phone with them and arrange a repayment method which suits you. Generally they are reasonably flexible in these cases.
This.

Make sure you've got everything straight in your own head though, as they don't know their own arse from a hole in the ground and it's not out of the realm of possibility that the error is theirs.
