Can Alex Ovechkin break Wayne Gretzky's regular season goal scoring record ?

Last season Ovechkin again reached the 50 goals a season mark; the eighth time in his career he's achieved this and is not showing signs of slowing down his scoring, as tonight he netted his 11th goal in 14 games so far this season. Its not uncommon for players to play up to the age of 40, and so 34 year old Ovechkin would need to average around 33 goals a season for the next 6/7 years to have a chance. Worth noting his current average is 47 a season.

I'm guessing you're a Ovechkin fan? I don't really care much for hockey but a lot of my friends grew up playing it.

The points record is the impressive one, no one really talks about his goals record. If he beats it of course it is an accomplishment, but the points record gretzky has might be untouchable.

Not so much Ovechkin but hockey in general yes. Got to utterly respect his game though, fantastic player/athlete.

Agreed the points record will never be beaten. Nearly 1000 points difference between him and Jagr in 2nd tells you the bigger picture really. Just getting into that top 10 would be an astonishing achievement.

However, that goals record is doable

A completely different player from Gretzky as others have mentioned, but what a combination of speed, skill, and power. It’s been an absolute pleasure watching his career here in DC. Worth the price of admission every game

I love that the commentators don't give a toss, look how much they are loving this... its great. In the UK you'd have some dullard commentator saying 'appalling scenes' and how they are bringing shame on the sport
