Azzurri
Player Valuation: £70m
I'm not saying our youth system isn't special, because it clearly is brilliant. But, if we had any decent strength in depth (which would obviously come if we had money), would we really be thinking our young players are as good as they seem?
For example:
The good:
Barkley - Clearly a special talent. Good on the ball, exciting, big, strong, intelligent etc etc. Makes a few mistakes with possible nerves or overconfidence, but deserves more playing time and I have no doubt he'll make it.
Eric Dier: Although not the most talked about player, the lad seems very good from what I've seen. If we can sign him at the end of this season he'll be one to look out for in the future.
The Alright:
Gueye - Can whip a good ball in and has some intelligent touches, but I wonder whether he's quick and strong enough to make it at this level or is he another Bily?
Coleman - Quick, tenacious and passionate. But, for me lacks the intelligence to play at right midfield and often runs down blind alleys. Although I think he'll be a good RB.
The bad:
Jose Baxter - Banging them in for Tranmere, but whenever I've seen him he's looked quite crap to be honest.
Victor Anichebe: The less said the better.
Obviously the likes of Wilshere and Sturridge are a class above most other youngsters, but Jack Rodwell looks like he's starting to fulfill his potential so at the moment I'd say he's our only young player who can be put in their category.
Maybe that talk was a bit pointless and I should have just asked my questions, which are these:
Are our youngsters any better than the likes of Henry Lansbury and Ryan Bertrand, or is it just the fact the rest of our players are in less numbers and not as good?
Do we pin our hopes on the youth too much due to the poor performance of our first team and the little money we have?
