Our young players - overhyped?

Azzurri

Player Valuation: £70m
I'm not saying our youth system isn't special, because it clearly is brilliant. But, if we had any decent strength in depth (which would obviously come if we had money), would we really be thinking our young players are as good as they seem?

For example:

The good:

Barkley - Clearly a special talent. Good on the ball, exciting, big, strong, intelligent etc etc. Makes a few mistakes with possible nerves or overconfidence, but deserves more playing time and I have no doubt he'll make it.

Eric Dier: Although not the most talked about player, the lad seems very good from what I've seen. If we can sign him at the end of this season he'll be one to look out for in the future.

The Alright:

Gueye - Can whip a good ball in and has some intelligent touches, but I wonder whether he's quick and strong enough to make it at this level or is he another Bily?

Coleman - Quick, tenacious and passionate. But, for me lacks the intelligence to play at right midfield and often runs down blind alleys. Although I think he'll be a good RB.

The bad:

Jose Baxter - Banging them in for Tranmere, but whenever I've seen him he's looked quite crap to be honest.

Victor Anichebe: The less said the better.

Obviously the likes of Wilshere and Sturridge are a class above most other youngsters, but Jack Rodwell looks like he's starting to fulfill his potential so at the moment I'd say he's our only young player who can be put in their category.

Maybe that talk was a bit pointless and I should have just asked my questions, which are these:

Are our youngsters any better than the likes of Henry Lansbury and Ryan Bertrand, or is it just the fact the rest of our players are in less numbers and not as good?

Do we pin our hopes on the youth too much due to the poor performance of our first team and the little money we have?

Agree with all of that. I wonder sometimes if Barkley's confidence is just really sensitive. I heard that after the Blackburn game he was absolutely devastated and in tears. A bit of an over-reaction but perfectly understandable given that he'll have been desperate to prove himself. I do not think he is over-hyped though. He's special.

I do think Vellios is criminally over-hyped though. Not that I think he's a bad player, mind. Gueye needs time yet. Our only big asset is Barkley, I believe.

McAleny seems to have a good rep. I'm only excited about Ross and Green though.

Wouldn't surprise me, if I was him I'd be in tears of frustration with lack of playing time at the moment.

You're spot on with Vellios there. To me he's a decent player to throw on to try and rescue something with 20 left but he shouldn't be starting at the moment and doesn't look to be the long term answer.

All these lads like Mcaleney and Gueye look like they have the potential to be decent players, squad fillers, or move to the lower leagues. But as you kind of said, the only ones who look like they could be stars are Barkley and Green, who I know next to nothing about.

Think Gueye's movement is top notch when I've seen him. Very mobile and technically sound with a great cross.

Vellios looks like one of those "good feet for a big man" players...he's very good with the ball to his feet, can beat a player. But because he's 6ft, he'll get played as the target man.

We never see Anichebe, Coleman, Vellios or Gueye?

3 of those are players bought in. And no I havnt seen enough of Vellios, Gueye or Barkley. Whenever they get a go they disappear for the next 3 months and are replaced with mediocre middle aged dirge.

Anichebe is 23. Not that young to be fair. And he's badly sh*te.

I'll let you have Coleman. He's alright but not exactly the answer to our right sided awfulness. Can't judge him really yet as he's a right back who never ever plays at right back.

Does the fact they're bought in add 10 years to their age? What I'm saying is, would they be anywhere near the squad at clubs like Chelsea, United, City, even Tottenham?

Yeah, I should have said, Anichebe's an example of a player everyone fapped about when he first burst on to the scene (don't lie, you did), who has absolutely failed.

Which one did i fap about?!

Most English youngsters are over hyped. The national team doesn't stink by accident. As it stands most of our youngsters are merely promising. None have really delivered anything on a major stage yet. Lets face it, Rodwell has gained one more England cap than David Unsworth thus far.

Reminded me to put my Victor avvatar back on Thursday now that Christmas is done.
