Methuselah - I haven't got an old Everton photo but I have got an old photo of a Liverpool local team which includes my grandad. I think it is taken in about 1899. There is nothing on the photo to identify the team but I think it is a team called Valkyrie FC. I think it might be interesting for some GOT members. There is also a possible Titanic link -

The original photo does not show the name of the team or any names of players. After a bit of detective work, I am 99.9% certain that the team is Valkyrie FC. My grandad is third from left in the back row. I found an old medal presented to players of Valkyrie FC, but it doesn't say what for. It has a date 1901/02 and that is all. My grandad was 20 years old in 1901. The only other ones I recognise are Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in the bowler hats! There is a Titanic connection here. The Chief Electrician on the Titanic played football for Valkyrie FC (Google Peter Sloan Titanic). He was the same age as my grandfather, so there is a very good chance that he is on this team photo. Unfortunately, he didn't survive the sinking. My grandad also played for Old Xaverians (who still play) for several years and also had a spell with Marine and Tramways FC. My Grandad was, first of all, a bookbinder with Rockliffe's Printers (who are still going) then as a tramdriver and finally as a Tramway Inspector. I have two other team photo's. One is Tramway's FC and the other, I think, is Old Xaverians. I also have a photo of my Grandad being presented with a cup by the Lord Mayor but don't know which cup or which team.

with Marine and Tramways FC. He was a bookbinder with Rockliffe's Printers (who are still going) and then a Tramdriver. He ended up as an Inspector on the trams. When we were kids we always looked out for him as we used to get our ride for free!

Send them & I will post them for you too...... if your computer behaves itself....

Just another bit of football history. If you look at the ball in the photo you will see that it is made in segments, like an orange. The segments were held in place by leather 'buttons' at each end. This ball was banned as some players died as a result of heading the 'button'.

Looks like one of those lethal 'medicine balls' that nearly killed me in PE at Anfield Comp.

The shin pads, and boots look like straight jackets......

Sorry Methuselah. I joked also about Butch and Sundance before reading your post. That's the way they dressed back in the day in the old wild west. The old wild west of Liverpool by the looks of it. Great photo.
