Kicking off: George Osborne meets young footballers at Soong Ching Ling Football School in China
George Osborne has pumped £3million of taxpayers’ money into grassroots football – thousands of miles away in China.
The Tory Chancellor boasted he will fund 5,000 new coaches in the world’s second-richest nation to raise awareness of the English Premier League.
Meanwhile grassroots football for young people in Britain remains woefully under-funded.
Labour’s shadow sports minister Clive Efford blasted: “It beggars belief Osborne would give money to the second biggest economy on Earth, when our own grassroots is so desperately short of cash.
“It’s a bitter pill to swallow for any kid over here.”
With an annual GDP of over £6trillion, China’s economy is more than three times the size of Britain’s, second only to the US.

The millionaire Chancellor – who claims to be a Chelsea fan – said: “This fantastic scheme which will bring new opportunities to young people across China, will also help bring increased awareness and investment into the UK football sector.”
But critics pointed out the Premier League is already the most-watched football league in the world and has billions of pounds to spend from advertising and TV revenue.
Meanwhile thousands of kids are put off playing football due to a disastrous lack of basic facilities.
Mr Osborne has slashed funding for local councils more than 25% since becoming Chancellor in 2010, with more cuts this autumn.

Cash strapped: Kenny Saunders and Stephen O'Reilly of the Save Grassroots Football campaign
Cash-strapped town halls have been forced to close dozens of leisure centres and axe maintenance in local parks in order to make ends meet.
A survey last year found a third of young people are put off playing football due a lack of decent facilities.
Kenny Saunders, who runs the Save Grassroots Football campaign, fumed: “This is absolutely crazy.
"It’s a kick in the teeth for grassroots football here.”
Liverpool MP Steve Rotheram, said: “We’ll be asking for clarification on why he thinks it’s appropriate to spend that amount on Chinese football”

Quite staggering that taxpayers money can be used like this to brown nose other countries in the hope that they invest in our country to the benefit of him and his buddies.

& will we then be buying our electricity off them ?

as well as a lot of folk being against nuclear power etc etc

Probably in the same sense we buy energy off of other companies/countries. I think 9 of the 10 biggest energy companies are state controlled, for instance.

It would be great if we were self sufficient, but given the apparent reluctance to try fracking, that is a pipe dream.

Good one
