Reidy's Bottle Of Grecian

The Unobstructed View
I've been today for an eye test, I knew the arl peepers were going a bit when reading and especially under lights.
So, I rocks down there for an eye test, I get working tax credits so don't have to pay for it and am also able to get a pair of free specs if required on the NHS, or a subsidy if I want a better pair.

Anyway, I have the eye test and as expected I need some gigs for reading +1.75 in right eye +2.0 in the left. I also had an eye scan which I paid £20 for, more for peace of mind really as my gran went blind due to Glaucoma & Diabetes, not certain if the pressure test was part of this or part of the 'Normal' eye test as not had one since about 1975. Anyway, they did the scan thing and showed me the big image of my optic nerve etc. showing me bits of damage at the back of my eye but nothing major she said, I was within the safe zone on the graph.
What she did ask was if I wear sunglasses ? to which I said "almost always when in the sun, but if I don't have them on 1st thing I can do without but once I've had them on then I have to keep them on, and of the type that don't allow any light to leak around, under or from above," explaining that I'll spend a great deal of time trying to find a pair that fit right.
She said that I should wear them when out to reduce the 'wear and tear' on my eyes, and they will help to slow down the damage on my optic nerve, explaining that its probably just age catching up with me.

So, downstairs we went and first off she heads for the sunglasses, they had all the usual brands there but she reaches for Maui Jims, I brand I know are very good, "here look at the Maui Jim Sign" so on they went "Wow, are they 3d ?" I ask. "No it's because they are Polarized." Hmmm.

So I say I'll sort my Reading ones out first, selecting the free ones explaining that as I'm not used to spending on specs as other folk are I'm quite happy to find some freebie ones and if I have to get Sunnies put the money towards them (the others were £15 extra £25 and up).
Then she heads back to the Maui Jims at £145 a pop, I explain that
  1. I wouldn't go for a Grey Tint
  2. I don't particularly like the style (triathlonish tbh)
  3. I'm entitled to the free stuff cos my income is low so £145 sunglasses aren't really happening.

I then start to ask her at what sort of price would she say "Decent" sunglasses start, ands what is the thing about them that makes them good ? i.e. is it U.V. they need to block ? To which she said "yes it's the U.V." I ask what is the level of U.V. that these Maui Jims block ? to which she said that they don't have the tags on like "Cheap" sunnies so she didn't know, and that "They are Polarized."

The point is, that once I wasn't going to jump at these 'dearest in the shop' sunglasses cos she wanted me to, she didn't really want to help me or offer any advice. I explained that I had only just stopped wearing a pair of Polarized specs, that had a decent rating on the tag, and altghough wren't obviously up to the quality of Maui Jims they were of a brand that at one time was quite popular over here and obviously had to pass European standards... Foster Grant. Again explaining that I'm not completely ruling out buying some dear ones but not right now (espesh when black & peeing down outside, I'd have looked a right tit marching out in them ffs).

As my Optician, that had just carried out my eye test & eye scan, I feel that she should have given me more advice tbh as opposed to just tried to flog me something, just cos I'm not buying her sunnies shouldn't mean the advice endeth there and then.
I also think that having carried out my eye test, if there wasn't a pair that I liked I should have been given my voucher to find a preferable pair from elsewhere.

I had a very sceptical 'view' of Opticians from dealing with them with my daughter buit now I'm kind of convinced that it's a bit of a Racquet that these places are running.
I think Dentists are a bit of the same 'Ilk' as you never know if the work is actually needed, and my mother in law caught one trying to charge for stuff he hadn't done as he didn't realise she was going to pay herself.

The common denominator with each is when you are an NHS patient.

The reading glasses she said "here are the free ones,"... are you sure these aren't all womens ? with my daughter you have to keep at them to get others out from cupboards as they try to palm you off with ones they want rid of.

So, first dealings with em for myself but not too impressed. Eye Test... Fine, but then after that they want big money or cant be bothered with you.

Anyway I'm Presbiocular..... and I'm gonna get some of those ready specs in both prescriptions and put the correct lenses in for my requirements, for spare ones to carry around, cos I lool like that red or dead fella with the ones off them, and i'm going to 'look into' the Maui Jims specs. and see if the others are of a similar specification.

Foster Grants, Polarized, 'maximum protection' and around £135 cheaper.

Just try a bunch of different ones Reidy...you'll know what's up when you put the right ones on. No two eyes are the same and neither are shades. Got mine from Costco, they're middle of the road but have lasted...Hobie's, Motion Seriess, Cabo's with copper lenses. They'd be around £35 in the UK.

I want my Killer Loops that some goddam glue sniffer smashed my sidewindow for in Christchurch.

My point was more the mistrust that I have for the Shops that purvey such goods.
I mean, it's not like it's a dream come true having to fork out wads on specs really is it ? Surely, they realise that when someone has never had to spend a penny on the things they aint gonna be over enthused about then being given the dearest ones on the rack. Especially when the said person is producing an NHS exemption ticket based on having low earnings.
I'll be needing some safety ones for when working as well, as I'm self employed I'm not sure who'll be footing that bill really, but i'll be saying that they need to be polarized for my line of work.

I'm guessing that you will mate but you shouldn't have a problem writing it off as an allowable expense
