... Walter Smith?

A nightmare? A Bad chapter in Evertons history? A bad manager?

Or

Just an unlucky time to manage Everton?, done well to keep us up considering the circumstances?

Yeah, in other words, his fault.

Welcome to the site tone, was looking for your email the other day :)

no probs mate
i was looking on newsnow and clicked a link and thought this looks familier lol

back to wally i can only think of one good thing he done and that was david weir great signing and servent to the club and a bargin at just over 200 000

all the best davey if you ever see this mate

I think he steered the club through some of its most troubed times. He had a couple of good teams but for some reason they did not gel. Having to buy and sell constantly probably didn't help.

I think we would have gone down if we'd had any other manager.

The time for him to go was about a year too late though.

i have a lot of sympathy for walter, he was continously hamstrung by agent johnson in every move he made.

if i could i would give walter the most prestigious medal of honour i could for helping the club oust the parasitic peter johnson.

walter actually brought some good players through, and signed some very good overseas players. gravesen, dacourt, materazzi.

he did drop a few clangers though. times were tougher then for us, and walter operated on a shoestring budget meaning a one in one out policy.

he never really got the chance to keep his better players and stabilise and strengthen. he was no genius, but he kept us afloat and in the prem, for that and his part in the johnson fiasco, i find it difficult to say a bad word about walter.

What about us taking the field with 7 defenders in the starting 11??

Obviously he had his good points, but overall, as a manager he left a lot to be desired. With his reported farce training sessions to his overly (even more than Moyes) negative tactics I was very happy when we parted ways.

he did well with what he had, he balanced the books(ish) and spotted some young talent in the ranks (rooney, vaughan) when they were barely teens

86 transfers in his 3 and a half year reign is shocking. and where did it get us? nowhere. i suppose its fair to say that everton had no ambition at all during the walter years.

the ambition to survive, and stay in the top flight.

ask yourself this, how many clubs do you know of that sell players without the managers knowledge.
