Anyone have any experience with OU?

Currently in a **** job and want something to work towards alongside that so there’s light at the end of the tunnel lol

Not personally, but I know a few former colleagues who did and didn't regret it. On a broader level it's worth doing if you want a change. I did similar, really opened doors for me. What you looking at studying?

Also, it may be worth looking into whether there are any suitable online degrees delivered by Swedish universities. Sounds nuts, but they don't charge for EU citizens. So you save the tuition fees. My mate did an occupational therapy masters down that route. Another lad I know did his masters at Stockholm uni and lived there for a year. Cheaper than paying UK fees lol. But you might need to be quick on this route, for obvious reasons.

Technically, the UK would surely now be exempt from this? I'm only asking because I wanted to do another Masters, and the idea of this really interested me.

With regards to the OU, I don't have personal experience, however I know people who have and they felt it was a really solid option.

Yeah definitely want a change and it seems a good option with something I can do evenings and weekends. Plus I work Monday to Thursday (6:30-5) so a full weeks worth but have an ‘extra’ day off to do it.

Tbh I’m open to a lot of the subjects, so still deciding but obviously times ticking...

That sounds interesting!

I've not heard good things tbh in recent times. Back in the day yes but I think it has struggled to adapt to the tuition fee era and quality has suffered.

Completely anecdotal, and there will be huge variation across subjects. It's a great idea to make these sort of changes but needs a lot of research that you're getting quality material and teaching delivery from the OU.

The OU was my millennium project. It took me 7 years to get a maths degree by 2007. I did have previous university degrees so it meant that I could use them to reduce the number of modules needed for this qualification. It also meant the study was not such a shock to the system as it was to some of my peers on the course who had done very little of that sort of thing since they left school. It was also a lot cheaper in those days as well.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and used it to change career. I chose to go into teaching which is the point in this tale where the positive overtones rapidly plummet ...

Done a degree and a masters in the last 10 years but personally thought that the physical contact time with tutors and lectures was a fairly archaic concept that is slowly going to disappear except in your top tier universities.
Friends that have done more IT based courses have done well from OU. Guess a lot is down to self motivation.

Your point about physical contact time is interesting - I think the pandemic will be the test bed for the model HE takes in future years. Cambridge have decided to move everything online this academic year, whereas other institutions are promising blended models of online and in person teaching for fear students defer. There are concerns students will be unwilling to forgoe the full experience. Presumably the latter means drunken parties and being sick into road cones.

Well what's the point of going to uni if you can't do that? lol

Distance learning is the way forward. The good thing about the Open University is with their part time route, that you can go at your own pace and fit it in around your work and social life - unlike a traditional campus-based education. You have to be self disciplined and have the motivation though, but it's very much worth it. It's also alot more respected by any future employer as it says a lot about your character if you can fit in the commitment of a degree on top of a full time job.
