Everybody behind a monitor is a tough guy. They feel safe in their own world wherever that may be, and they feel they can use expletives or sling accusations and not ever feel the consequences. That may be so, but what I have noticed is that more and more online communities are just a hive of anger ready to be unleashed.
I should know, I've petered on the brink on more than one occassion, until the lightbulb went on. Bottom line is that it's pathetic, people have other people. Whatever colour, creed, race, sporting team, town, religion, political standpoint and so on...
You can be looking on IMDB for a film you've seen, take a look at some of the comments, and two weapons are arguing the toss over whether or not Keyser Sose was Kevin Spacey or not. (sorry for the spoiler, but if you've not seen this film, you deserve to be spoiled), then you can get over to YouTube and watch any clip that has a black person or a white person in it, and a member of the opposite race will chime in with a racist remark, or someone else will think someone else is throwing a racist remark, when in fact they are not - and thus a barney erupts.
There isn't a football forum in the world that doesn't have petty squabbling about meaningless [Poor language removed]. Even Facebook has it's moments in the evil sun, and as for Twitter, well who's on Twitter? You can hide behind 148 characters and a weird avatar.
I have been doing an awful lot of looking back of history over the past 12 months, in television, reading, games, research, and music - and I can't help but think that 100 years ago Humans were nicer people to eachother, or they were more honest with themselves and didn't hide behind a blert window.
What is the next stage? I mean we already have kids under the age of consent playing 18 rated war games against other kids under the age of consent. Who can talk to eachother through the technology - how long before that becomes a reality?
It's a scary world out there - how can we expect the politicians and world leaders to agree on anything when our subjects can't even agree to get along without arguing about petty stuff?
***off soap box, and whistles off into the valley of the shadow of death***
