That is sort of the plan, have a central base and experience the area, but without having to pack up and find new accommodation every week or two.
But we also love the idea of just living somewhere and really getting to know it.
My recommendation to just living and getting to know a place would be down in South west France in the Biarritz region. Gateway, and a marvellous town in itself, to the French Basque region which dovetails into the Spanish Basque. So much culture, French, Spanish and Basque. Lots of great villages, towns and cities like San Sebastian, which has a Rio de Janeiro look and brilliant old town. Then along to the fervent Basque city of Bilbao which is very atmospheric. Guggenheim museum to visit too. Lovely coastline and you can head off inland and explore the mighty Pyrenees and maybe visit the legendary running of the bulls in Pamplona in July. The Basque country is well worth getting to know I promise you.

I got this weird slow train from Bilbao to Santander once. Was incredible. Stopping at all these tiny groups of houses. Took forever like.

So many surprises round every corner. Finding Guernica and so much of the Basque history lay there. Then trundling up the river to coastal Bermeo and cruising back down to Bilbao. There's an adventure coming at you all through this land. Was driving up a hill on the main road from the border to San Sebastian when what should come over the rise toward me. A tank! Was during the troubles there, early 80s, and bombs were going off all over but it was still an unexpected encounter

yep, there was a few mills in FW, wiggins was one of them.
I'm pretty sure at least one of the mills in FW is still running, could be wrong though
Fort William is a mad place to grow up, I’d have thought. The town itself is pretty grim, surrounding area is unreal. Feels very isolated.
