Me and the wife are going to take a year off and live in Europe for a year. We are looking at 2023 / 24, so I assume all the covid nonsense will be a distant memory. We will probably choose 4 destinations for 3 months each.
One will be back in my home town in the Scottish highlands, and probably 3 months somewhere in France.

What are the recommendations for the other 6 months? And what would be a great place in France for 3 months?

Portugal.

Anywhere in particular?
I don't know it that extensively, I've got friends who live in Sintra and in the countryside near Fundao and both are beautiful, and I've spent time in Lisbon and it's probably my favourite European city. It's somewhere I could imagine living.

It's properly rustic where my mate lives near Fundao though. He gets his water from a well and from a spring on his land.

Sounds fantastic, will have a look ;)

We did a couple of weeks in Italy a few years ago, I wasn't overly impressed. Found the people rude and arrogant, but the scenery and history is awesome
I'd have said Italy. Pasta, wine and beautiful scenery. I'd have said that about French people, well parisians

I think it kind of depends where you go in Italy. It's such a diverse country it's kinda mad that it holds itself together as one state.
