One step closer to marijuana decriminalization at the federal level

It only took them like 200 years to decriminalize this ridiculously harmless drug. And, similar to lottery, consider how much the state/local governments could bank from taxing it.
Unfortunately it is not a done deal yet, the Senate still has to vote and approve it. But I agree that it is quite absurd that it has taken this long, specially given all the medical benefits one can achieve out of this lovely plant. Moreover, there are so many other benefits we could achieve with legalization. For example, states could begin collecting taxes on marijuana purchases and this money could be used in green energy or other eco-friendly projects. Legalization would help eliminate the damage to pristine forest where marijuana is illegal and as a result growers try to cultivated there to keep it hidden but by doing so they are damaging the environment around them. Another issue that legalization would solve is the massively incarceration of people for growth or possession. An estimated 40,000 people today are incarcerated for marijuana offenses and most of them are people of color. Less people in jail means more money resources to spend somewhere else where is really needed. Even people that are not incarcerated have been affected by having a marijuana offense on their criminal record thus impeding some of them of being considered for some jobs thus ruining people's career options. We could also start cultivating more hemp (right now there is no difference between hemp and cannabis in some states when it comes to criminalization) and make use of hemp for things like paper, clothes, plastic, etc. As a cover crop, hemp also enhances soil health. Anyway, I could go on and on so I better stop lol
