Old Football on TV memories

Other than the FA Cup Final there was no live TV coverage when I was growing up in the 50s and 60s. Very few highlights either before MoTD. BUt I can remember watching Gerry Lofthouse doing his midweek sports review TV programme some time in the early 60s when he suddenly, totally out the blue, announced that Everton were playing at Sheff Wed and proceeded to show the 3 goals we scored to win the game. I think it was an FA Cup replay. Simply magical. Bear in mind that in those days there was little radio commentary either, so for a midweek game you used to get your team's result only on something like the hourly news bulletins.

Not quiet sure about that old bean, I remember evening games with Stan Cullis's Wolves plus some others like Spurs, also the odd England game ( Vs Mexico 9-1??) The Everton Vs Inter Milan was live on BBC in 1963.

Slightly off topic Vernon ( the scorer ) was not offside but Young could have been, the rules being a bit stricter then.

My first memory of TV football was probably the WC '98. I just loved watching Zidane, everyone banging on about Ronaldo then me in the corner talking Zidane greatness (i was 9 but spoke like i watched 60 years of football - ye but zidane is dead fast, zizou is boss mate etc etc) the news ronaldo might not make the final was memorable.
Manchester United beating Bayern in the Champions league final also springs to mind.

.Even in the early 70s being 12/13 it was still a thrill for us to be on the telly. Used to be great.. the old platform 'football bus' from its start off at Old Swan Tech to Priory Road...cross over..buy a programme from the old Toffee Shop on Bullens then one of us would shout...look the vans are there. The OB vans...big aerials and massive cabling all over the floor... were dark green for BBC which meant Match of the Day...or pale blue for Granada, Sunday afternoon. Gerald Sinstadt Granada's footie presenter ...all glasses, sheepy and tache... would often pitch up while we waited to see the players at the car park. Granada then didn't show the Big Match with Brian Moore very often as it was predominantly southern teams shown as it was London Weekend TV produced You would get though a second games highlights though from one of the other regions...eg a Midlands team would be shown from ATV/Central with Hugh Johns commentating or Anglia TV with Gerry Harrison commentating on Ipswich. We also had KickOff on Granada - a half hour preview type show on a Friday evening again with Sinstadt and all NW teams were featured. People always mention ITVs On The Ball or The Saint and Greavsie as the Saturday preview show but I preferred the old Football preview on Grandstand which later became Football Focus. No gimmicks, just a straightforward solid no frills journalist Sam Leitch presented it and I used to hang on as long as I could to see if the likes of Bally or Joe Royle was on as I used to have to leave to get the two buses to Goodison. Happy days. Christ I sound like Uncle Albert off Fools and Horses

The Villa 6-2 game probably.

However i always remember seeing Tony Daley and thinking his haircut was the coolest thing that had ever existed.
