IIRC Arsenal are still paying for the Emirates Stadium, and will be doing so for about another 10 years still. So they may not have the money available for players that people think they have.

I was under the impression that they were one of the few clubs operating in "the black" so to speak.

(Not in a racist way like.)

Your're probably right, and they have had money from player sales but seem reluctant to spend it. But I'm sure that they are still paying for the stadium as well.

I'm sure they are, a big gaff like that doesn't come cheap.

As for the reluctance to splash the cash, I'm not sure if it's Wenger or the board who ultimately decide how much is spent and on who. But this is the club that used to have Bergkamp, Henry (first time round) and Fabregas, a club that played Barcelona in the Champs League Final. And once went a whole season unbeaten.

By holding back on the purse strings, they are moving further away from that all the time.

And they've never replaced Vieira, which for me is the root of all their current problems.
