Former Everton flop Andy Van Der Meyde tried to convince compatriot Royston Drenthe not to join the club because of the 'temptations' on offer in Merseyside, according to reports.

Dutch news site HP De Tijd has revealed a voicemail left by Van Der Meyde on Drenthe's phone in August 2011.

He said: “Royston, I hear that you are on your way to Everton. Don’t do it redcoat, I beg you, don’t do it.

“Liverpool has too many temptations for guys like us. Before you know it you will be dragged into the nightclubs.

“There Bacardi flows and you can ski on cocaine; and the women, Royston. Oh man, oh man, oh man. Those British women with their short skirts…”

How serious is this? You even said redcoat.

Drenthe did join the Toffees on loan shortly after and lasted only 11 months before moving to FC Alania Vladikavkaz.

Reports suggest that Van Der Meyde also made a trip to Vladikavkaz and spent a few nights there before reporting back: “Nothing to do. Ugly women. The coast is clear.”

Van Der Meyde struggled with alcohol and drug related problems during his time at Goodison, where he only managed 20 appearances in over four years at the club.

Somebody got paid actual money to make that up.

Shocking really.
