Given what happened at the w/e in regards to additional time added on etc, got me to thinking about the current process and whether it would be a good idea to have a separate time keeper etc.
As i understand it, currently the referee monitors and notes any additional time (eg for subs, injuries, excessive goal celebrations etc). This is then conveyed to the 4th official just before half time and full time. 4th official displays the additional time supplied by the referee. The ref can add on more time within stoppage time (eg another sub or injury). It is still fairly subjective and not very transparent.
In other sports (eg Rugby League), they have separate time keepers and they stop the clock for specific outages or when directed by the referee. The clock is usually clearly displayed, so everyone knows what is happening (no Fergie time). I also like the hooter and how play ends when the ball goes out of play option in Rugby Union.
Thoughts?

to be fair our fans ran onto the pitch, the ref was about to blow up anyway, they just happened to score.

nothing wrong really with the way it is, only thing that i don't agree with is the blowing at a corner. At least let the team take the chance before its over!

Well, you know who was guilty of one of the most controversial such decisions - disallowing Zico's goal for Brazil v Sweden in a 1978 WC?
Yes, our old friend Clive Thomas!

Been going on that long? Jesus! Think it is a horrible thing to do, if you award a corner or set piece then let them take it! If it goes in, last attack of the game, if not then everyone is satisfied.

I understand where you are coming from, but for me, that is part of the excitement - not knowing exactly when the whistle is going to go.

And let's stick with the whistle. If you really want hooters, there are plenty of bars you could go to.

making a sensible proposal = not going to happen for 20 years...if then.

I've always thought this was the way to go. As for when stoppage time runs out, if a team is in the midst of an attacking move (and not just fannying about midfield), it would be allowed to play through its conclusion, either a goal or a loss of possession, at which point the game would be over.
