The grimmest film I've ever watched, up there with 'When the Wind Blows'. Saw this as a kid in 83, terrified me!!!
Strats off like a naff soap, then **** gets real, British style :/

260 times more powerful than the Nagasaki and Hiroshima bombs! That'd have wiped the US eastern seaboard off the map.

Incredible story...I bet there's been loads of these incidents too.

There was an incident in the 80s when a malfunction caused the warning alarm in a soviet bunker to go off. The non commissioned officer in charge was supposed to launch his missiles in retaliation. thankfully he banked on it being a mistake and almost certainly saved the world....Unbelievabley he was later given a dishonorable discharge for not following protocol .

They where close anyways I believe. A commando raid on a small ferry town in Norway somewhere sank a few vessels carrying the last few raw materials needed to make the bomb.

I read somewhere between Merica and Russia they have around 10,000 of these warheads. Roughly 10-20 would be the end of the world as we know it.

M.A.D. mutually assured destruction

Although I think the big 100 megatonne bombs are old hat it's all tactical nukes... with some neutron bombs in the back of the shed, for just in case, Oh and some chemical and biological stuff, again just in case.
