Greetings fellow blues.
The transfer market is only weeks from closing, and i think it's safe to say that every premier league fan is both concerned and excited by the season to come. This becomes evident when you look around here on the forum (almost 2000 pages on the different Transfer Window threads). But despite the vast amount of replies, most people agree on one thing: Buy a LB, a CB and a CM (Some also think a striker)
But what if we don't "really" need to sign players in specific positions, but rather different types of players?
Looking at our current squad, only Pickford, Jagielka, Coleman and partly Niasse show some kind of passion or leadership, and only Pickford and Coleman are certain starters.
And very importantly they are all defenders. Attackers don't necessarily need leadership or passion because they can rely on technical abilities, drive and pace. I'm actually very pleased looking at our attack: Richarlison, Walcott and Lookman (maybe), all posses forementioned abilities, while Tosun is a more physical player, relying on positioning and his finishing. But it's our midfield that makes me nervous. I actually think they're quite technically gifted, but none of them has shown that they can link the team together on a regular basis.
All top six teams have at least one player where the teammates can say, "if I just get the ball to him, he can make the right decision". Players like David Silva, De Bruyne, Henderson (yuck), Wijnaldum, Herrera, Pogba, Matic, Kane, Eriksen, Özil or Xhaka, are all eager to take responsibility (they actually WANT THE BALL). Whereas, the moment Schneiderlin and Gueye gets the ball, the only thing on their mind is: "How the f do I get rid of it?". Sigurdsson is a quality player, and at least he tried to show leadership and take responsibility last season. What I'm trying to say is: The most important position to improve is probably the CM, but the player we bring in HAS to take responsibility, otherwise it will be another case of the Klaassen, and we will be in the same situation next year.
If we don't get someone willing to go deep to fetch the ball, someone who can take responsibility and spread out the play, then we are going to end up with more side and back passes than ever before, and then I really think creating chances will be difficult.
Finally, I shall end this post with the same authority as Everton FC - You're in my Heart, You're in my Soul, when I ask:
