seems a bit harsh doesn't it ?.I suppose if he'd won the play offs then they'd call him a genius.Guess the minimum was promotion as in all fairness a club the size it is should be playing championship football or better. How many seasons are they down there now ?

I'm a United fan, and I'll offer a different perspective:

He's done a pretty average job with a very large budget (1.5 million on a right back!), big fan backing and free reign to bring in whatever type of players he likes. He talked about "quality not quantity" and yet we ended up with a squad of 30+ senior professionals, a disturbingly large proportion of whom are either fullbacks, ex-Derby players, crocks or scurrying midfield midgets. His team spent the entire season without proper centre-halves, and we paid the price in a huge number of goals conceded from set pieces.

Despite his advantages, he's played awful negative football and cautiously played it safe against teams who had previously never won at the Lane before. Call it misplaced arrogance, but he didn't make many friends among the fans by constantly claiming that a point against Yeovil/Crawley/Fleetwood/[insert name of other perceived smaller club] was a great result. He's generally pig headed and feels we've played well when everyone in the entire stadium has been bored almost to death.

His track record says he plays the same way everywhere he goes, so won't change. For all of this, it looked like he'd be staying, but it seems as though there was a bust-up at the end of season board meeting - my money's on a conversation something like this:

“Board: Nigel, what are you going do differently next season?

Clough: Nothing.

Board: Right, see you later.”

You're right, the 5-5 draw against Swindon was one of the most boring games I've ever seen.
