I always liked him. Thought he did well in the 2002 World Cup for England.

Was overshadowed at Man United considering the talent he shared the pitch with.

Everton could certainly do with an in his prime Butt right about now

He was gash, everyone always knew that he was gash, but surrounded by quality at United. He proved he was total toilet when he went to the skunks.

I thought the same matey, he did play well in that tournament. He wasnt the best of players and it goes to show you dont all have to be 'world class' to play in a top team, but he had a good teamwork ethic, not dissimilar to Phil Neville. Always 100% focused on what he had to do for the team

He wasn't overshadowed at all, he was just crap. He was the english version of Robbie Savage, totally **** footballer who thought he was hard because he was this so called ball winner.

Dreadful, dreadful player

Picture the scene, Sunderland away in the league on a Sunday afternoon, and Inter Milan away in the last 16 of the champions league on the Wednesday. You have trusted captain and all round very bad egg Roy Keane and his understudy Nicky Butt at your disposal :-

do you...
-Play Keane at Sunderland and hope he comes through unscathed then run him into the ground in Italy 3 days later?
-Play Butt in both fixtures for some reason
-Utilize your squad and play the lesser player in the lesser fixture knowing full well that although Butt is inferior to Keane he is still far superior to whoever he is matched against in the Sunderland side - thereby giving Keane the weekend off to travel fresh to Inter and giving the best chance to your side of being at your strongest to make it through to the CL quarters.

See also, Phil Neville. David May. Jesper Blomqvist. Wes Brown. Quinton Fortune. Ronnie Wallwork. Teddy Sheringham. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

In essence, having enough 'in reserve' to face some of the lesser sides in the League to provide a breather to your best players for important fixtures in the Champions League or even FA cup semi finals is a smart thing to do.
