Now I have another question, please.
I have some portable external speakers which are powered through a USB connection. Plug in to the Nexus and get no power - do I have to change / install any software to make it power the speakers?

Cant do it. has to be headphone jack. Possibly if connected to a pc but then whats the point, you cant use a hml to connect to a tv apparently ?

maybe when rooted you can ?

Sorry but maybe I haven't been clear - the headphone jack from the speakers gets plugged in to the Nexus to take the sound AND the USB from the speakers gets plugged into the Nexus aswell to give them power.

You're looking for the port to supply power over USB, and more specifically at an output that will accommodate your speakers. It won't do it. You can pick up, starting at a reletively low cost, Bluetooth speakers for it.

£40 (ignore price on link, I know you can get them for this price) 4 out of 5 star review

I have a Big Jambox

I wouldn't normally have paid that price, but I had a voucher refund off them I needed to use. I ended up having it for half price.

Thanks. That Jawbone any good?

I use it all the time. The sound quality isn't as fabulous as the reviews would have you believe though, which just makes me think the original Jambox can't be that great.

I'd recommend going into a few shops and listening to the devices, the big Jambox is at the high end of what's realistic to pay for this sort of device. It's very handy for conference phone calls too, or hands free calling. It works pretty well. It's a bit too big to lug around in your hand though, you can grip it and carry it, but you wouldn't want to be walking around the streets holding it.

In the house I use it to watch TV in the kitchen, via TV catch up. And it's very handy for listening to the radio via the internet (Tune in app), I don't own a dedicated radio. The battery life is great, and you get an indicator that pops up on your device to show you how the battery is doing, so you'll know when it needs charging.

Having wi-fi probs with 1 of the tabs thats on 4.2.2, other 1 & phones seem fine tbh. Could do with rolling it back to 4.2.1 tbh 'til they sort it out or bring out 4.3 or whatever as she uses it on wi-fi all of the time.
