Hi lads,
New to this. Been viewing forum and on twitter for past year or so, most performances last season just depressed me and our ability to play football so poorly. This season it's more a case of being frustrated at knowing the ability is there, just without any intensity so i've spent the past month raging at the TV for 90 mins on a weekly basis.
As the name says, been working as a performance analyst at Opta for the past few years, including doing every Everton game live, my hairlines aged about 20 years in 3 years.
Just thought be good to be able to vent my frustration at some of the performances i'm seeing at the min haha.

I was interested in any Everton insight really. I guess anything that comes out in the numbers as a particular strength or weakness. Appreciate that data is probably readily available online but any insight from your experience would be good.

Beyond that it would be interesting to know if the data is showing something is wrong,why isn’t it resolved. Is it Player ability, coaching ability, manager buy-in etc etc.

Erm from my perspective it would be too hard to say, I just collected the data like passes, ball recoveries, tackles, interceptions on a game by game basis etc. so I never really got to see what would come up as a strength. A lot of my weeks were spent doing a lot of obscure games, Japanese J-League on a Saturday morning, French Ligue 1 &2 Friday and Saturday night's so we didn't really pay much attention to any particular stats if that makes sense. If I was doing Everton on MNF for example, I would just insert each event as I saw it and Sky or whoever would use specific stats. So whenever you see graphs of players or teams who play % of passes long, random stats like that it's just collected by analysts like me and sent over to different stakeholders who collate it to suit their needs etc. I've been doing it years and still can't properly explain it to any of my mates without sending them to sleep hahaha.

I think a lot of it is certain managers using the data, irrelevant but remember Moyes using it heavily when he was with us to buy players like Fellani. Only time I would get chance to read into stats or anything would be on Twitter, always remember how poorly our midfield showed last season though and that was what drove our interest in Hojberg before he went Spurs
