Happy New Year @Ducans elbow
Remember my grandad telling me about something like this... Basically everyone would go to a neighbour's with coal for the fire on nyeLoved reading this, getting an insight into other folk cultures.
Here when I were a kid we'd throw a party. My dad would go out the back door just before midnight and on the stroke of midnight he'd ring the bell and be welcomed in bearing wood and coal to bring warmth for the new year.
40 years later I do the same but get odd looks from modern people! Sadly we don't celebrate our folk culture much in the uk.
In the late 50s, the Mar and Arl fella were (probably) up at the Heath Hotel. Just before 12 my Gran would send me...as the eldest, out the back door with the lump of coal...and maybe some thing else but what ever it was...(if it was anything, was likely to be a bottle of Guinness) is lost in the mists of timeLoved reading this, getting an insight into other folk cultures.
