Ok fair enough. But we just because we have the same colors as Chelsea doesn't mean we can't wear all white on the road or white tops and blue shorts with Chelsea wearing the opposite right? Sorry for the ignorance, but it's just not something you see over here. Teams have home and away unis and that's it. Depending on the sport it's dark tops/white tops for home and away. I was always curious about that. Thanks for the answer.
My fellow Yank, in the last 15-20 years over hear most teams in the big 4 sports and major college sports have sported a 3rd jersey. Not all, mind you, but its far from true to say that teams just have away and home, and that is it. Maybe when I was a kid (70s and 80s) but not since.
And yes, its all about the benjamins. Mo jerseys/kits, mo money.
BTW, there is not enough bandwidth on the internet to list all of the subtle differences between US and "world" sports that exist for no obvious reason.
we wear all blue against both of those
Baseball yes, but that's mostly on Sunday getaway with a game the next day for laundry purposes. The NFL just started with this throwback stuff, but we know that's about money/marketing. Not sure about the NBA because I could care less, but I don't think so. Hockey doesn't.
I was just curious because the colors are so radically different from the team colors.
All NHL teams are required to have a third sweater. That's the main reason teams switched and went to dark colors at home and white on the road. They were having a tough time when the home team decided to wear their third and didn't want to travel with all three sets of sweaters.
As you stated, though, it's so I have to feel pressure to buy another one. That's fine when it's the Blackhawks black barberpole look, but when the NFL's Bears wear that god-awful orange one once a year for Halloween... bleh.
That said, sign me up for the ivory Everton 3rd.
Everton had to 'invent' one for the MLS Cup game.
