So for those who do not know my background I’m serving in the armed forces as a submariner at present. I have my notice for termination submitted and leave next January. I joined the service when I was 17 so don’t know much apart from that.

I’m on the train now going to Glasgow to go to a career event with a company. On the email I received it says the evening ends with networking drinks.

What is this? Will they be on the lookout for people who can’t control there ale and prey on ladies or men? Or is it a genuine thank you for turning up have a glass of champers?

It probably depends on the industry, but generally it’s an informal way for people to figure out who they like and don’t like.

In the airline industry they ask, “is this a guy I can grab a beer with later?” which is code for “will I get mad at this a*hole and want to punch him in the throat before our shift is over?”

In the industry I’m in currently drinks is a way to get a sense of the personalities in the job (which may easily contain 8 or more participants collaborating together). Who will carry their weight and more and who will squirrel out of a deal, and who will stab you in the back for a few extra $$.

Good luck and don’t get too wasted.

I don’t think it’s a massive booze up to be fair.
