So for those who do not know my background I’m serving in the armed forces as a submariner at present. I have my notice for termination submitted and leave next January. I joined the service when I was 17 so don’t know much apart from that.

I’m on the train now going to Glasgow to go to a career event with a company. On the email I received it says the evening ends with networking drinks.

What is this? Will they be on the lookout for people who can’t control there ale and prey on ladies or men? Or is it a genuine thank you for turning up have a glass of champers?

Most likely a gathering where you can talk with others and build up a "network" for future job possibilities.

It’s a piss up and a fight.

Last man standing gets the job,

A bit like Thunderdome, but with Buckfast.

id swerve it and just go home... wait till you hear how the other messed things up with potential employers by getting ratarsed ...

Are you going for an interview? May be to see what you are like in social situations. So have a glass or two and don't eat a large scotch egg whilst talking to management.

Reading this made me think of the scene in Mean Machine with Vinnie Jones and that bloke punching each other while taking shots. Battering each other for ages with full punches and the finishing dig is a palm to the forehead. Crap film that.

....an opportunity to chat with folk on a more informal basis.

It’s not an interview. It’s for then to show off there company and get you to apply for them. They like to take ex armed forces on as we have a different skill set they say(don’t know what that is). I’m out with a few mates after in Glasgow so won’t be sticking around long to upset folk.

Arrive with one of those costumes on that make you look like you're riding a horse, strip off to reveal a royal blue mankini and yank it right up your arse crack, then ask management to rub Vaseline into the areas that have chafed. Then put the horse costume back on and gallop round the room knocking over the buffet they've put on and disappear into the sunset.

Thank me when you've got the top job.

It sounds awful. And I bet they are judging you. I would turn up, view everybody with suspicion, be polite or throw lots of phrases like "blue sky thinking" "high level overview" and "we are where we are" into your conversation. They will love you.
On the other hand it is also your opportunity to judge them. If they use any of the above phrases run away, very fast!

I would use it as an pooportunity to abuse the free bar.. and probly end up in the womens cubicle covered in vomit and p1ss at the end of the night...

Something to get to know you better. The fact there are drinks are neither here nor there. Just a social event where people can loosen up and you can talk about yourself with management and other businesses depending on what is taking place.

So highly recommend you stay for a while, not all night but make a good impression of yourself. That way they can learn a little bit about you socially and if you sell yourself well then make you more appealing to potential managers.
