When I got a job in the DWP a few years back, six people were hired at the same time - I was the only one of the six who actually got the job who didn't already know someone in there.

It's the way the world is, the key is learning to be enough of an arsehole to turn it to your advantage.

Sometimes there's a good reason for this. Where I work, if I put forward someone for an interview and they get the job then I get £500. That might sound weird but it's done on the basis that if I recommend someone they're probably half way decent and it also saves a fortune on agency / CV firms ( eg Jobmonster ) who normally work on a salary percentage or fixed rate which is much more than £500.
