eraser = pencil + 1.00

substitute out the eraser

pencil + (pencil + 1.00) = 1.10

2 pencil + 1.00 = 1.10

2 pencil = 0.10

1 pencil = 5p

Forgive this divvy asking the question, but where do you get 2 pencils from?

The question asks (hypothetically) what would the pencil cost without the rubber, not:

You have two pencils, one with a rubber, one without. The rubber costs 1 pound, what does the pencil cost?

As I said, probably being a div but I just don't see it.

Actually now I have fully woken up it's obviously 5p, didn't need any daft equation either.

The obvious answer is 10p, but then the rubber would only be 90p more.
