I work in the NHS as a few of you know, and I see the general point in the OP, but I don't think it'd be enforced well.

You'd have to have proof that lifestyle caused the illness too.

Just tax the lifestyle so. £20 for a box of fags, 50p on every litre of fizzy pop etc etc.

I'm a student and a fair bit of my disposable income goes on drink but I must say I also think it's time to tax strongly by the unit - particularly on 'takeaway booze' so as not to damage pubs further and even help them to compete - because from my vantage point right this second at the bus stop outside the Argos at St. John's I can see two groups of alchies doing on the cheap 'cider' and when I lived on Lime Street we were harassed for booze money if we left the flat after sunset.

If these people don't require the use of the NHS it will be because they require the state or a charity to bury them. Price them out I say!

Smokers pay enough tax and that ought to be the price they pay for the insurance policy that is the NHS.

A tax on horribly dangerous foods should help pay for sufferers of related illness.

Don't smoke, don't pay for it.
Smoke, pay.

Eat well, don't pay for it.
Eat loads of trash, pay.
You genuinely cannot tax that effectively.
