Durham Toffee

Shameless Wool
Evening!

I'm from Durham (a little old place in the north-east of England) and I am hoping you may have heard of it. It is some way in the frozen depths of a seemingly forgotten land! Five years back now, I met a truly wonderful woman and decided that I should marry her. My wife is originally from the Walton area and her parents still live there, along with her two older brothers. The whole family are staunch Everton fans and I've long battled for her affections. In the few years we've been together, we've been blessed with a wonderful daughter and we are quite settled here in Durham - though my wife does miss going to Goodison. I just liked to watch the odd game on TV and never really supported a Premier League side, instead taking an interest in local non-league teams and playing amateur rugby with work colleagues. I didn't ever really fancy the mighty Newcastle or Sunderland as I just never clicked with them - I know that seems very odd! I've travelled a few places, so I've never put down roots until meeting my wife. Now it's great to be back home in Durham, but I have given longing glances to the north-west of the country.

We've had no plans to relocate as the bairn is settled in her school and she has friends in the area now. Plus the wife and I are lucky enough in the current climate to have reasonably stable jobs and so it hasn't been something we've given much thought to, unfortunately. I say unfortunately because she has now given me the Everton bug and I wish I could get across to see more games.

Back in April of the last season (2013/14), we travelled to see her family and stayed with them over a weekend. Everton were playing Manchester United and her brothers invited me along, saying that I would witness a cracking game and never look back. Of course, Everton ran out 2-0 winners and they could not have been more right. Her brothers joked that I had been converted and I was able to admit that I could feel something stirring! Everyone there was fantastic and the craic was top-notch. I really felt welcome and part of a great club. I am now utterly obsessed with Everton and my wife is pleased, to say the least!

In comparison to others, I know extremely little about the club; being a fan for those few months now. Any knowledge of the team's history comes from my wife and her borthers, and I've attended that one and only game in my life. But I am willing to learn and have already been stalking this forum for a long time before getting up the courage to join in! I'll certainly feel foolish when I talk about the team like I have some ownership over them or as though I'm a born and bred Toffee, but it really does feel wonderful to be part of a community like this and to share a cracking obsession!

Thought the best place to start would be here.

Cheers!

DT

Welcome mate
Durham's boss, we have relatives in Witton Gilbert so tend to time visits round S'land and Newcastle games (y)

We've got one or two posters here from the area as well so, oh hang on, I see AF is already making the introductions.

Welcome anyway mate.

Guess the bairn stops you and your wife travelling to too many games, like?

I know there's a lad on here from consett who has a season ticket, and I had one myself last year. It's 3-4 hours each way so doable as a day trip but not cheap and it ain't easy to find babysitting either.

Still hopefully you can get to see a few games next time you vists your lasses family, nout like the old lady in full voice.

Yeah, I've looked into the possibility of a season ticket and factored in a train return ticket every fortnight or so...just hugely expensive at a time when we're still building back a fund after the house purchase, new bairn, etc.

It'll be a tight decision. May just promise myself a single game every two months or so...
