The effect you desire can be accomplished by a an aggressive swipe of the knife sending some beans perilously close to the oblivion of the plates edge. This will keep the coalition intact and the stragglers will be dealt with as part of the 'mopping up' process.

I had a pie, creamy mash and minted mushy peas for my tea last night. You can stick your posh, nouveau food compared to this mighty dish.
