I hear this said a lot. Is there any data on how much of a spike (if any) we saw in merchandise shifted during his first spell?
I'm a bit dubious about it being a significant amount and, therefore, sceptical about it being part of the rationale in bringing him back over.
Nothing reported. What I can point you to is the increased amount of Americans here, the increased amounts of discussions of Everton in general among American soccer circles (and media), and the posts about shirt sales here and on Big Soccer.
All anecdotal, but I am comfortable saying there IS a lift. He's one of the most popular soccer figures in the US - he does sell shirts here too remember, one of the top-sellers (not sure if he or Dempsey is #1, but it's one of them with the other a close second).
How big of a lift is the true question.
Also - not just merchandise. Brand recognition, media coverage and television. All of which you do get.
You cannot only think about the short-term and merchandise. Everton is a much more popular brand in the US compared to only two years ago - and that's mostly due to Tim Howard and Lando. Anytime I mention I support Everton here, the usual phrase from a Big 4 supporter is, "oh, the team Landon and Tim play for?"
You shouldn't be skeptical.
EDIT: Oh, and you only need to look at how much the team is pimping him out right now to recognize they want him (and he most likely is) moving some $$. Website sales are quite easy to track and optimize. He's a lead story until we get our striker (cough) in January.
