Moyes on Rodwell

I've always thought Rodwell has one simple problem. Even when he is on form, he disappears for 15 minutes a game. When he gets the aggression and hunger of a Rooney or a Gerrard and starts being "everywhere" for us for 90 mins, he will fulfill his potential.

In a nutshell really.

He'll never have that. He's laid back and composed. You're asking him to develop a whole new personality, it just won't happen.

Which is why I never understand the comparisons with Gerrard. He's absolutely nothing like him.

I think he can, he's changed this season and has been putting himself about a bit but not regularly.

He's not gonna be fist pumping and grabbing games by the scruff ala GBH and Shrek to boost the side because like you say its not his personality...but he can ask for the ball more and get stuck in which he does sporadically.

I'd say Wilshire isnt for example an aggressive badge kissing, forceful player like a GBH etc, but he is a tenacious player who always wants the ball.

Rodders just needs to want the ball more.

Again though, Rodwell is not and has never been a tenacious player. He's nothing like Wilshere either. Even when he was on form he didn't demand the ball; he just got into space well in attacking spots and had a half decent shot. His passing range was never that wide either, it was always short range, but when on form it was short range but direct to a striker on the ground.

It's like I'm seeing a completely different player to everyone else. I think, at most, he's a box to box midfielder, but his best play is always with the game in front of him rather than having to receive the ball, spin on it and pick out a pass.

I wasnt comparing Wilshire to Rodwell, I was making a point that Wilshire isnt type of player that's grabbing games by the scruff ala Gerrard, Lampard and Rooney but is a player that wants to be involved for 90minutes, asks for the ball, and can keep a midfield ticking with a high work rate.

Rodwell just needs that in his game.

I've said previously, he has tried and shown to have more in his locker. The Villa game showed he had a varied passing range with some diagonal long range passing. He's showed he can tackle and his desire against City and the RS (before the sending off). And he's showed his attacking intent (2 goals and 1 assist so far..more than Saha and Cahill) for club and in the 2 international games.

The problem is doing it regularly.

The difference between his England games and club games show a lot, and its the same with Jagielka. The "he only passes side ways" for Rodwell is a by-product of how we play - pass it out wide. We also dont have a good link up player behind the striker for him to pass "forward". Just as Jagielka is a bad hoof merchant for us, but not for England.

In the international games, Rodwell was the link up to the striker, worked the space behind the striker, hit the wings when needed, got into some good attacking positions. Never or hardly does that for us because, IMO, Fellaini generally does that and is far more box to box and wants the ball more.

The only problem he had in the England matches was drifting and not asking for it. He passes reponsibility rather than pulling back and asking for the ball. He'll drift into space and hope someone else can help out the player with the ball rather than going over and wanting it himself.

He's got another 3-4 years to round his game before he's the finished article to be honest.

I think the bit where he asks Jags to pass on a message from the stands is pure class.

He really takes an interest in the young players and his passion for them to succeed is evident here.

And I agree; we do have the bedrock of a sound team here, with plenty of hungry, young players.

I just hope we can build on this and not allow it to peter out like it has done over the past seasons.

I see where Tubey's coming from with respect to the lad's personality. More like Lampard than Gerrard in that sense. Which means he can be a top player imo.
