Moyes - getting it right tactically now

I have pointed out too my non everton supporting friends the hoofball tactics and too see if they agree, watching last night nearly everytime we got the ball Heitinga apart it was whacked upfield so i dont know how much you can read into last night, lets get some consistency in our play, and the fans who were there deserve a pat on the back last night, goodison was rocking.

I think he started hibbo instead of duffy last night to counteract dzeko as weird as that seems when you consider the height advantage.

If you look at the games duffy played, the mistakes he made were generally switching off, and losing his man for a split secone like happened against bent for villa a few times. Now dzeko is very good at that, slipping his man and getting to either the front or back post unmarked. Im sure moyes was worried bout this and went for the experienced head over him

I only watched it on MOTD but looked like Hibbo was never very far away from Aguero with Jonny watching Dzeko. Hibbo is pretty good when given a man marking job but like i said i only saw it on MOTD. Nice to see Hansen giving us a bit of credit for once instead of his usual ****e

Agreed, Hibbo is probably the best man-marker we have.

The fact that he played a proper striker (who was allowed to actually harrass defenders and have a pop at goal) and some genuine attacking midfielders is a pleasant change. Perhaps he realised that no team can sit back and defend for 90 mins against City without conceding so the longer we could spend in their half, the less time they would have to attack us!

The test of whether DM has decided to be positive and throw just a smidgeon of caution to the wind will be if he plays both Jelly and Straq against Wigan. We really ought to be able to play a 442 against Wigan and still prevent them from scoring. If Jelly and Straq can both get on the scoresheet that will increase their confidence and give the club a further lift. Then we can say that DM's tactics may be improving.

first half wasn't to bad for hoofing (from what i can remember). heitinga took the ball off howard quite a lot. second half was normal service with howard waving the defenders away.

On paper we have a top quality midfield which can compete with the best. The thing I find frustrating is that the players seem to base more of their positional play on the defensive sid eof the game,,, what I mean by that is even when we have been attacking in previous weeks we still never had great numbers in the box to get on the end of any crosses coming in. I think with the addition of gibson to the team it has given players like felli more freedom to attack without worrying about the defensive side of his game as a priority...wether this is moyes deploying good tactics or wether he never felt he had the personnel before gibson i dont know, all I know is we look better as an attacking force now that we have gibson in the team.

Sounds funny to base a theory on attacking based on a defensive midfield player ha ha.

Wigan really are awful and i agree there is no better opertunity to play with 2 up top and for Jelavic to open his account early and build a little confidence

Uh oh do hear the echoes of 'best squad in years'?

Cue 1-0 loss at Blackburn (or Wigan in this case!)

i wouldn't go that far,,but look what we now have in midfield alone, Gibson, Rodwell, Drenthe, Donovan, Barkley, Pienar,Osman, coleman and on and on,,,, if you cant pick a quality midfield from that then we really are in the brown stuff.

I dont think he is getting it right as much, there are still weak links in our team that could be subbed - for example Neville shouldnt be playing.

And if Jagielka/Distin were fit i doubt Heitinga would stay at CB, along with if Osman were fit, we would be playing him on the left every match

Wigan - start with the team from last night and give Jelavic the last 20-30 after Denis has worn them down.

With Felli-Gibson and Straq through the middle we have found a formula so let's stick with it for now.
