Other than a forced decision, by that I mean Distin being selected because there was simply nobody else, does Moyes always sign a player and then not play him for about a game and a half?

I remember Lescott never went straight into the team, nor did Baines. Billy never, nor Heitinga, and now Neill won't either.

I personally don't buy into the Match Fitness malarkey, tend to believe it is managers being stubborn, but I'm not a manager so what do I know.

A blind man would have seen that playing Billy instead of Osman would have benefited the team against Fulham. As would Heitinga instead of Hibbert.

I think he likes to give them time to train, watch the games, absorb what the game is about, then throw them on.

Some managers just buy players and throw them on straight away. Depending on how good they are at fitting in or how many times they've trained they could hit the ground running....

Or they can be below par and their confidence might get hit.

I think fitness is a key component in Moyes's team and his players. The new boys need to be at top fitness to get a run out.

So he compromises quality over fitness. Its not like the players have sat on their arse playing PS3 games all summer.

I think it's the same when it comes down to the subs, he just never takes chances, apart from one time when he made a cats arse of it and brought on 3 subs moments before Jags collapsed.

Not sure about 1.5 games, but afaik Moyes has always been slow to put new players into the team. Imo he is the same with youngsters. Everyone talks about how we are a great club for young players to come to and get playing time, but that is more due to necessity than Moyes belief in youth. Other than Rooney and maybe Vaughan, I'm sure all the others have only got playing time because there was noone else fit. Rodders wouldnt be playing now if it wasnt for the injuries to Arteta etc, and lack of depth in midfield.

But anyway, back to the point. Yes i concur, he is a big fan of the 'settling in period' and easing players into the team. I think partly because he likes them to gel/become 'one of the boys' first, and partly because he likes the 'safety' of using players he knows what to expect from in our team, even if they aren't as good.

Lol, well you cant really blame him for that! And you wonder why he doesnt do that more often!! :P

I don't think that is the case, that's like saying Messi wouldn't have been playing if Ronaldinho hadn't lost his marbles. Class will always shine through and Rodwell has been known to be on this path for a long time.

Back on point though. Safety is the key. Today he is likely to start with Jo over Yakubu and go with one up front again. When we are all waiting for the Yak to be unleashed and bang in some goals.

I do think fitness plays a massive part. There's a players fitness from their previous club...then there's Everton fitness.

Moyes probably wants them at certain level before they go out.

Not sure to be honest. Moyes won't be told, he's that kind of man, and to be fair to him he's not doing a bad job. I just think he sometimes make it harder for himself.

You've got to take into account that this is a team that for 90% of the season isnt going to be rotated and will be playing maybe 50 odd games.

Its a squad that last season had players that played 120minutes of football in an FA Cup semi, then played a full strength Chelsea 3 days later.

Fitness is a big focal point for Moyes. He wants players that can get up and down for 90minutes and do it all season. Just look at the engines on Pienaar, Baines, Cahill, Ossie, even Fellaini nowdays.

Its a massive factor.

Oi, listen to Ghost, he won the League in his 3rd season on FM, he clearly knows more than 3 times LMA Manger of the Year David Moyes.

Moyes likes the players to gel, to get to know their team mates, to train, to learn peoples names, to learn peoples style, which foot they use, how they like the ball.

Its just basic football management really.

Right, game time usually helps with that though.

maybe he likes to see if osman and hibbert (the plays in contention to get dropped) can show a reaction and improve there performance. I also dont really see why osman should be dropped, last year he bagged 2 goals against fulham.
