My missus and I have decided we shall move to NZ to be closer to family later this year and will be looking to set up home somewhere around Auckland.
I work in construction(foreman/ ganger) so will be searching for employment so any peeps with advice for a) affordable areas to live, we will rent initially
b) any decent construction companies to hit up.
c) if that dont work out, will take work in the hobbit version of The Lisbon...
Cheers guys.

What Elong said.
I currently live there and the housing market is absurd, traffic is horrendous and price of living is high. If I were you i'd be looking instead at a regional centre like New Plymouth, Hamilton or Tauranga, there's still construction jobs there but with a cheaper cost of living and a house is somewhat affordable.

If you are set on moving to Auckland I can give you some advice about where will be cheaper etc . however.

As someone who has moved to NZ in the last 5 year, and currently work and reside in Auckland, let me give you the best advice I can.

DON'T MOVE TO AUCKLAND.

It has a ridiculously high cost of living. Rental prices for absolute dross are off the charts and if you want to buy, well, don't be alarmed to find that a horrible house that is damp and moldy will touch $1 million.

Traffic isn't that bad, contrary to what @Kiwi alluded to (it isn't a patch on LA, New York, Virginia or Hawaii). However, they have awful planning. When planning for new roads, they build for the need right *now*. By the time it is finished it is completely inadequate.

My missus has been offered a job at Green Lane Hospital, Epsom. Family lives at Beach Haven so you can see why Auckland is the place, spent New Year over and noticed to price of accommodation so it is a worry.

Beach Haven is just down the road from me (like 3 minutes in the car)

Stayed about 2 mins drive from there a couple of months ago. Not the worst part of Auckland. Traffic is bad around there though. Good racecourse and cricket grounds plus One Tree Hill, bit of a landmark. Rather live in the provinces like I do though.

This is the most disheartening response for help I've ever seen on here.

Well done you Maori monsters. Fie game.
If you like living in moldy damp houses, that have no insulation or reliable heating source that cost upwards of $500 a WEEK for rent, all while paying over twice what the UK pay for food, while getting fleeced for consumer goods, then yeah, it's a lovely place to live is Auckland!

You know, if you are coming up to Auckland, you should really let us know and we can have a beer together at one of the famous waterfront bars that charge $15 for the privilege ;)

It was a flying visit for my partner's graduation unfortunately, missed out on seeing a couple of mates, stupid females!

The waterfront is outrageous for prices. Father Ted's is a decent place for a beer though just off Queen's St.
