Mourinho's first failure

Player Valuation: £70m
Looks like Real won't win anything this season. I think the goal was undoubtedly the CL.

They never really looked convincing in it and he didn't gel them the way I thought he would. Everybody knows Real are a basket case behind the scenes but from the outside looking in it doesn't appear he's had too much strife to deal with.

Massive rumours he's on his way back to Chelsea so it looks like he'll leave the Bernabeu without achieving what he really set out to do.

I wonder what type of reaction we'll see from him?

Hope he doesn't come back here, as you just know if he goes to Chelsea then Abramovich will throw huge money at them again. Abramovich will probably use one of his companies to sponsor Mourinho's scarf for £100 million or something to get round the fair play rules.

They'll win the cup, he hasn't done a bad job a Real but it hasn't worked out. The fans and the board never warmed to him and he did some stupid things like poke Villanova in the eye! The board seem to think he was a bit classless.

Think a return will be good for the Premier League which has looked a bit laboured at times this season, it doesn't seem as lively as it was when Mourinho was around.

Ancellotti to Real? If you look at teams after Mourinho has left them they've all stalled a bit, he is terrible at bringing through youth players and often leaves the next guy in charge with a bit of rebuilding job.

Jose and Real seemed like a natural fit

The question I'd like to ask is, if Jose hadn't gone, would they have won the league last season?

I don't think they would of personally. He gave them the competitive kick and spite they needed to pip Barca to the title last year

In that regard he's a success. He did weaken Barca. The problem is that it was really hard to maintain that intensity, and it's shown this season.

Plus, the players never appeared to be with him, unlike Chelsea, Inter and Porto.

I think they'll get beat in the cup too TBH. Ancellotti would be a good choice for Madrid too.

I think if he comes back to Chelsea he'll have them challenging for the title immediately. Be good to see 3 sides competing instead of the usual 2. Plus he's entertaining. I'd expect Chelsea to get the CL final within 2 years if he goes back.

In fairness, what is deemed a success at Real Madrid anyway?

They won the Champions League a few seasons back and promptly sacked the manager (Del Bosque).

Stupid club living beyond their means and being allowed to cheat the system just to keep their prestige.

Another poisoned chalice of a job really.

On the money this.

People criticisng JM's time at Madrid need to remember just what a vice-like grip Barca had on Spanish and European football before Mourinho went to Madrid. He chipped away at Barca and got uinder their skin (certainly Pep's skin) whilst he put together a system that could soak up all Barca had to offer and come back with big hits themselves to get on terms with them again. The domestic tussle between Barca and Real should be the primary focus of Mourinho's time at Madrid. In that respect he did a very good job...and I think that had knock on effects for Barca's CL campaigns too.

The CL: they may not have won it, but I disagree they never went close under Mourinho. Last year's SF with Bayern they were the better team overall in the two legs and really should have seen off Bayern if they'd have taken their chances. They'd have seen off Chelsea in the final handily, IMO, given his knowledge of the set up.

You know as well as me almost counts for nothing Davek. They've spent fortunes and haven't even gone that close.

Whether they've weakened Barca is up for debate too. Look at Barca this season in the league. It's rare even the most dominant of teams win a league four years on the bounce. Mourinho got amazing consistency out of Real last season but it's almost standard that they'd win it if Barca have a bad year, which they did.

If this is a Mourinho failure, i'd love him to come and fail with us.

Let me put it that way.

If we had their players and spent their money as well as paying him £12m or whatever it is I reckon you'd view it a bit different IJJ?

Depends if we'd won the league last year and in the cup final this year.

I'm a shallow idiot. Not arsed how much things cost as long as they are boss.

Best paid manager in the history of football, most expensively assembled squad in the history of football (though to be fair they pay less in wages than barca, it's not like they're competing with paupers), 3 years; 1 league, 1 or 2 domestic cups and no european trophies.

It's not a fantastic record. A good one, sure but by both real's and mourinho's standards not good enough. It's his egotism, feuding and off pitch behaviour that's cost him the job, though. You only get away with that stuff when you win everything.
