fulfilling my lifelong dream of working in football.....:hayee:

Is Tawd Vale still going? Used to go camping there every summer with the 7th Anfield troop.
We used to go camping Tawd Vale through the 80's scouts and ventures, must've went at least 6/7 times each year. Even used to do the 'work weekend' were you went at the end of winter and cleared ditches, leaves, dug drainage, loved that place. Favourite camp of the year was the feast of lanterns at hallween time.
Used to love putting on the displays, all the local people would come from miles around to visit and check it out. Never be allowed these days I'd guess

Most unusual ? Very first job after leaving school, aged 16, working in an abattoir, in 1976, very few jobs available in Liverpool. My" interview" was answering one question, "when was the battle of Hastings " and because I answered the question right before my mate, I got the job.
The fellow who asked it, while, nonchalantly shooting at rats with an air rifle, was a huge, obnoxious Austrian, who spent all day, as I found, shouting and screaming instructions at us. I was paid the the princely sum of £15:83, (still remember that very first paypacket :) ), for what was simply collecting a big blue gurney of boiled pigs heads and peeling the skin off, throwing away the eyeballs.
You had one bonus free dinner.....bacon, sausage, eggs, blackpudding, I didn't eat the first day.
It was a biggish open air place, I started in early September and finished, due to a row over a pound a week pay rise in December, remember being absolutely froze working there.
Not an experience I care to think about much.

The river that ran through the camp was only about a foot deep but there was one area (about 20 yards long) that was about 4 feet deep, where we used to go swimming. I think it must have been dug out specially. There was also a quarry that had about 20ft water, which we always kept well away from. Used to get the train to Ormskirk and then walk to the camp. Always seemed like 50 miles to me! 1940's when I was there.

River tawd, yup, the bit where it was a tad deeper was called Devil's Elbow, used to have a death slide over it when we went. And the Quarry , as it was called, was the 2nd coldest place on earth. We used to do canoeing on there, you dreaded going over.
They built a swimming pool up behind the quarry un the early 80's, even on the hottest day it was colder than the freezing quarry.
Done that walk from Ormskirk to Tawd many a time as well, some of my mates are still involved with the scout movement and been trying to get them to sort a camp out, but it's only a scout place, hoping they'll find a way around it .

Had a summer job painting pylons when i was 18 for CLC , we were painting in a field full of cows one day and they kept drinking the paint.

I painted EFC on the side of one of them, but was spotted by a farmer, who wasn't happy and grassed me up to Manweb.

Instant dismissal.

shocking stuff..

I remember a time when I was the remote control for my parents TV. Luckily there was only 3 channels at the time, I'd have quit had sky been around then.

Actually probably better suited to the oldies thread.

Spent a glorious year working part time as a senior fish fryer at Harry Ramsdens whilst at Uni. Great pay, loads of perks and even the obvious downside of smelling of chip fat was sorted by having top notch showers and changing rooms on site. Absolutely loved the place :D
