Looking for a new phone to buy, had a Samsung S7 for years and years now... any ideas what phone I should go for? Prefer androids over i phones

If you’re interested in all the specs/details as opposed to just buying one you think looks good as an upgrade, it may be worth checking ‘Marques Brownlee’ on YouTube to help you out. But I go for iPhones every upgrade so can’t help you with android!

I tend to buy mine sim-free from John Lewis. Currently using a Motorola G5 so cannot pretend to be remotely interested in having the newest, shiniest phone on the market...

If I was replacing mine tomorrow, I'd look at this:

But I'm sure others on here would suggest that the RAM and the onboard storage are both a bit low, and depending on your usage style they could be right.

I usually go the one below the new one as you can get a hi-spec bargain as they're busy pushing the new ones and want rid of the old ones.
If the latest is a '12' look for the highest spec 11 or even 10 depending on budget.
Also sometimes they make a mess of one new roll out and the previous one was actually better.
More research is the key

What's your budget? Are you buying new or second hand? Will it be on a contract or buying outright?

Probably £200 max, new ideally. I wouldn’t spend anymore as a tradesman I tend to drop/scratch it or even when I was an apprentice drop it down a portaloo lol

I love my galaxy notes. Had a note 2, note 4 and now a note 9. If I lost it tomorrow I'd have no qualms about getting the same.
