Ministers are proposing a minimum price of 45p a unit for the sale of alcohol in England and Wales as part of a drive to tackle problem drinking.

The Home Office has launched a 10-week consultation on the plan, arguing it will help reduce the levels of ill-health and crime related to alcohol.

It is also considering banning multi-buy promotions, such as two-for-the-price-of-one.

The 45p proposal is 5p higher than the figure suggested by ministers in March.
It comes after pressure has been mounting on the government to follow Scotland's lead, where 50p has been proposed.

The aim of a minimum price would be to alter the cost of heavily-discounted drinks sold in shops and supermarkets. It is not expected to affect the price of drinks in many pubs.

The Home Office said the consultation was targeted at "harmful drinkers and irresponsible shops".
A spokesman added: "Those who enjoy a quiet drink or two have nothing to fear from our proposals."

Absolute morons.

It's actually a good thing... well, if it worked it would be. Supermarkets use it as a loss leader to generate sales, whilst people buy in excessive amounts and over-binge. Teenagers have a far easier time accessing ale in supermarkets, and it's cheap enough to purchase en masse on benefits to promote heavy alcoholism.

Not only that, the pubs are dying on their feet due to not being able to compete with home consumption on the price. And people are more concerned with getting drunk as quick as possible rather than actually socialising it seems.

It won't work as they'll find ways to circumnavigate it, but if it did work I'd like to see it offset by putting the extra VAT made from such sales towards subsidising the cost of a pint at the pub, so the prices become more in line.

It's an atrocious idea.

The price increase isn't going to be high enough to actually stop those who are addicted to alcohol from drinking, it will simply leave them with less money to spend on other things.

Why should it be made more difficult for poorer families to enjoy a drink just like those who are well off ? It's just another way for the government to collect tax from the people and be seen 'doing something' about alcoholism. It's the easy way out and makes life harder for those who are doing nothing wrong.

Tbf alcohol is ridiculously cheap in this country. Im not complaining like, but I can understand why they might wanna do something about it. How much would this increase the price? Like how much is it now?

It's just as cheap in countries like the Czech Republic, cheaper in fact. The key difference there is you can also get cheap alcohol in pubs.

Nah, it just means instead of buying 24 cans of Stella from Asda, you buy 12. I don't think that's unreasonable. I don't see it as a lower class "right" to binge drink TBH.

It'll still be cheaper than a pub by some margin. A pint from a Supermarket would cost anywhere between £1 and £1.40.

Ah right. After gathering all the facts, I have come to the obvious conclusion that David Cameron is yet again doing great for our glorious conservative nation.

You can't sell alcohol for a loss in Finland. The things it has lead to are:
People drink less in bars since they can't do happy hours or what ever to pull in customers
While people drink less in bars and drink more at home, it has lead to a lot of import of beer, wine and spirits from cheaper EU members notably Estonia and Germany.

While you don't have a neighbouring country similiar to Estonia when it comes to alcohol price, I'm sure you'll that problem users will neglect their basic needs and use more of their money to bevvy or they'll find cheaper sources off the stuff.

just more tax, and yet more criminals make hooch and passing it off as real stuff, as normal we get done either way.

Yep. This tax isn't going to stop people with actual alcohol problems from drinking as much as they normally do, it will just make life that little bit harder for honest lower income people.
