He demands a say on where his millions are spent which is only natural, Newcastle supporters are demanding Liverpool type spending to get a couple of extra places up the league, Ashley obviously doesn't see the point of upping the clubs/his personal losses.
Neil Moxley in today's People makes almost exactly that point - that Ashley has seen that it is pointless trying to compete with the Sky 5 (+ Spuds) so is content to rumble around in mid table with a club in moderate profit.
I can see the sense as Leeds/Blackburn are a classic examples of chasing a dream. Doesn't help the fans but perhaps he's a realist?
The thing is they've lost 5 derbies in a row for the first time in their hsitory, they're dire to watch, they've gone out in the first round of the cups pretty much every year.
That's the sort of stuff fans care about and ashley doesn't.
As a fan, I would wholeheartedly agree (We [EFC] are not so different to the Toon other than mainly not being so dire to watch but we do have our moments) but as a businessman, I can see Ashley's rational to not pumping endless millions in trying to match Chelsea, Utd, City etc as they will outbid/out pay your club especially as FFP is now cocooning them against an upstart
I think it's a strawman though.
You don't need to spend city money to not be as dire as they are right now.
