In the summary of the City-United game they were talking about how Mancini switched to three centrebacks (Richards, Lescott and Savic) and two wing backs (Zabaletta and Kolarov) at half-time and what a tactical masterstroke it was as it allowed them to get forward without being exposed on the counter.
I've been saying for ages that Moyes should experiment with Heitinga, Jagielka and Distin at the back with Coleman and Baines given the freedom to play as wing backs. We could still have Rodwell and/or Fellaini sitting and Drenthe and Donovan floating behind the striker. It seems like a no-brainer to me, but I don't know whether our team are intelligent enough in their play and adaptable enough to pull it off. After playing 4-4-1-1 for so long, it might totally confuse them.
I like this because it gets our best players on the pitch, and in areas where they are best. I hate it when all of Jags, Heits and Distin are fit but one sits or plays out of position. Also, this formation can be converted back to a 4-4-1-1 or 4-5-1 at a moments notice by just sliding Heitinga up to DM and dropping Coleman and Baines back.
Right now, if all are fit, and excluding LD because he's here for just 2 mos., I would like to see Jags, Heits, Distin, Baines, Coleman, Rodwell, Fellaini, Drenthe, Osman, Donkey striker du jour. Barkley first sub. Pick your best players and THEN pick your formation.
Rodwell. Fellani
Royston Donavan
Barkley
Not sure if any team in the prem has a better midfield just need moyes to have the same vision
I'd prefer
Osman Neville Heitinga Rodwell
Fellaini
