Who has been to one, was it expensive, and what did you think overall? Are they really distinguishably better, or is it all lot of self-promoting nonsense?

Some are good, some not so...

I've been pretty privileged to have eaten in quite a few Michelin starred places, across the world, from Claridges in London (1*) to Nobu in Las Vegas (2*), to some 3* place in France.

All have been pretty interesting food. I will say that I thought Nobu in Vegas was very overpriced for what it was.

Probably the best I've had is in Claridges...

I love the whole experience though of multiple smaller dishes as you tend to get a good variety of flavours etc...

I also tend to use the sommeliers recommendations on wine to accompany the food.

Some have been expensive, others not so much - so the most recent (See Thread of Last Meal Out) was very reasonably priced for the standard of food. 78 Euro's for 7 courses is pretty reasonable.

For those wanting to sample a Michelin starred place - it's not a bad price.

Not my kind of thing really, fancy foods with portions the size it wouldn't touch the side. Much prefer a plate rammed with steak chips and onion rings

I thought that i had never been to one, but I now that I think about it I have been to Gordon Ramsey's cheapest one in Mayfair, I think it is called Maze.

can't say I was too impressed. Portion sizes were small and not even that tasty. Would rather a good local curry.

What did you have to eat mate?

I have been there too, and you're right - it wasn't that impressive. Portion sizes are small, but there does seem to be more of them (courses).

There are a few near me. One is basically, a Pub. I think a Michelin Star is few reign to pretty much charge what they want. Toyed with booking a table at Fat Duck for Mrs R a while back. Christ, something like £200 per head, plus wine, plus service. No food is worth that, IMO.

Been to quite a few mate. Try to get yourself to a two* joint in the provinces. The 'brands' are generally trading on previous endeavours. If you want a 'made' name and you're into classic French with outstanding service check out the Roux's.

You must be near Bray then.

I would seriously give some consideration to splashing the cash on the Fat Duck. I've not been there myself, but from what I understand it's not a 'go there if you're hungry' type place - it's more of an experience than that.

I've perused his menu a few times and it's pretty outlandish stuff on there - snail porridge, smoked bacon and egg ice cream. I'd go just to try some stuff like that. Plus Heston's Christmas Feast looked amazing when I saw that!

The Hind's Head (is the pub I think) that he's also owns, I'm not sure if I've been there or not...

Dont live any where near Bray mate, just fancied a treat for Mrs R. (She loves Chico see, so I have to woo her back). The one near me, is literally a Pub though.

Steak and chips. I remember the steak came on a slab of slate and was the size of a starter, while the chips were those double-cooked fancy types. All in all, it was more about the venue and the experience than the food, and if you were serious about getting a good steak you'd go elsewhere. Relieved that I wasn't the one footing the bill..

Have been to many over the years, some good, some pretty poor and some spectacular.

This guy is a friend of mine and has an excellent website devoted to Michelin starred food : http://www.andyhayler.com/

My favourite chef has for many years been Alain Ducasse, he very kindly cooked for mrs the esk's birthday a couple of years ago.

Although I know Gordon Ramsay personally I don't rate his food, not now anyway - 15 years ago he was brilliant.

The Hinds Head in Bray does not have a Michelin star but is pretty good - the Hand and Flowers in Marlow is much better though.
