Michel Platini threatens retired Franck Ribery with suspension

This is just unbelievable.

Also, I doubt it would stand up in a court of law if Bayern challenged the diktat.

And would the French international player want to force an unwilling player to turn out and play?

I wouldn't.....his heart just wouldn't be in it.

Sod off Platini.

Whilst this whole story is clearly a farce, what sort of player wants to retire from international duty at 31? If you can play for your club week in week out, you can play for your country too. Representing your country ought to be the highest honour in sport, not something you run away from to protect your massive weekly wage (yes, I know the clubs pay the wages but there's no changing that now).

That's why I've still got much respect for Beckham, who never retired from International football, saying as long as the manager might need/want him, he'd be ready.

Mental.

Re: the post above I disagree. Some people just aren't patriotic and he might not get on with certain people in the national team set up. It's his decision.

Honestly mate thats a load of codswallop, when the same governing body that controls international football doing things like expanding the European championships or World Cup so we have the likes of Germany, England and Spain etc having to play 'competitive' fixtures against the likes of Gibraltar and the Faeroe Islands, Questionable awards and bribery of officials to award certain countries the major tournaments, the absolute joke which will be the world cup played in winter in a desert dictatorship and the obscenity that is players earning 300k or more each week

And you expect amongst all that the players to be the one thing that rises above and proudly kisses the national badge and all that rubbish.

Beckham was driven partly by self interest in representing England, it kept his profile high in the sports pages back in the UK whilst he was swanning off playing in a third rate American league whilst still not massively away from his peak, but yeah it was all for the love of Country mate if it makes you happy to believe so.

More noble to retire from it when past their peak and give the younger generation their chance if you want to create a alternate spin on how it could be perceived, well that and the fact that the club/fans who are paying them 100-300k per week will actually get the chance to see them perform

Also interesting to note how no one mentions the national federations who quite often crap all over a player from a massive height, for example, if you play for a none fashionable club much less chance of being called up, but when they need you - well ya drop everything and run cap in hand to them, utter rubbish, i'd wager the majority of Evertonians couldn't give a flying you know what about the England national side and if all our players decided to retire from International duty I'd be more than pleased

Funny how no one really minded Ferguson not wanting to represent Scotland as well mate, although i'm guessing @The Cowboy would state he thought he was wrong not to

If the general theme of this is that national football is a joke I'm with you.

Oh and a last note, how patriotic are the English governing body, not seen many games for England played up our neck of the woods for a whilst and won't until they pay off their nice new shiny 'national' stadium

It is mate lol, long post i know, but National football and the fa's that control it are just in it for what they can get out themselves really, that goes for most countries around the world

I just don't get the fact I'm suddenly meant to cheer when Raheem Sterling plays in Daniel Sturridge for a goal.

Same, its why at any major tournament i always just pick a team with no players i hate in to to cheer for lol, well harder these days with the multi national squads like

then again Brazil seem to have a player in about half the worlds national teams nowadays like
