Michel François Platini

Playing the Euros all across the continent was his idea and he's football's biggest tit because of it.

Awful decision.

In what way? In terms of footballing ability it's not even close. He was a good player no doubt but Maradona was in a different league to him completely.

If he'd led France to winning the world cup in 82 (which he would have done had Schumacher not tried to kill one of his players and somehow got away with it) and then to the euros in 84 (where he scored nine goals in five games which is stunning) and then to the semis again in 86, combined with his expoits at Juventus where we won just about everything then yeah.

I honestly think we'd be talking about him in the same breath as the real greats. It's only that failiure in two world cup semis that's a blip on his CV. If he'd won one of them, people would be arguing Platini vs Maradona every day.

There is no guarantee that France would have beaten Italy in the final though. If anything Italy had matured throughout the tournament and were hitting form at the right time. Italy’s victory over that Brazil side was massive at that time.

I think the main difference for me is the sides they played in. Platini’s France was a good side with some good players, Juve were a great side. By the same logic you used you could argue Juve would not have achieved the same had Heysel not occurred how it did.

I remember watching football throughout the 80’s and Platini IMO was never at the same level at Maradona. Diego did what he did with Argentina in 86 and Napoli in Serie, in far inferior sides to Platini’s and Maradona’s contribution to those sides was far greater. In terms of footballing ability alone Maradona was streets ahead and had more to his game.

Perhaps it’s the hairdo but Platini always reminds me of Alain Prost and so I guess Maradona was more like Senna. An arrogant Frenchman, capable of using the best resources, politics etc. to achieve his goals and a South American blessed with massive natural ability, capable of pushing the boundaries to achieve the seemingly impossible.

If people currently argued about Maradona and Zidane then I'd agree with you, as Zidane was at least the equal of Platini as a player, but with the World Cup win under his belt.

Platini was a superb player though, of that there's no doubt. Think Maradona has a rep, especially with English fans, because of what he did to us in Mexico.
