Player Valuation: £8m

Quite a brave thing to be as open and honest about suffering from a mental condition. Especially seeing how Stan Collymore has been ripped the p!ss out of for over a decade for the same thing.
Hes at Stoke now, alongside another player of repute, Etherington reckons he has gambled away over £10million before he started to get a handle on his addiction. With the pressure and intrusion into the lives im surprised more players dont crack.

I'm more amazed that a relative journeyman like Etherington has even earnt £10 million in order to gamble it away.

Etherington was a compulsive gambler at west Ham & everyone knew , sheringham though who fancies himself as a pro-poker player apparently used to play with him (knowing his situation ) and take a fortune off him. Apparently the rest of the players tried to get sheringham to stop but he wouldn't and I'm told that that sums up the blokes character & maybe explains the opinion many have of him. I think Etherington for various stages of his career (perhaps till now I'm not sure) was paid basically 'pocket-money' the rest going out of his reach to be managed by others

As somebody who has been closely involved with depression that lad has massive balls for even admitting he had a problem, very difficult thing to do, especially for men who want to be seen as 'strong'.

Yep, makes you wonder how much stick he will get in game from the juvenile players who seem to play it these days.

He hasnt, he tolled up a lot of debt.
A certain high street bookie was happy to let him get into a right state, they are scum bookies, utter scum (and those FOB machines prove it).

We did get very close mate and I think the 'personal' stuff may have made moyes' mind up but as you know better than most we 'get close' or 'pull the plug ' on a few. I know him and sheringham got on mate but I also think a lot of people felt sheringham took advantage of him & his situation a bit and didn't stop it try to stop what was happening . I know the people who looked after Etherington felt (maybe still feel that) but his gambling on every level (which it's obvious you know ) was out of control and he owed a lot of people a lot of money
