Michael Chopra to play for India?

I have a weird fondness for whenever a crap over the hill English journeyman discovers an obscure international country he can play for.

Remember Ruel Fox turning out for Montserrat? Or Carl Cort's escapades for Guyana? Or Danny Higginbotham's game for Gibraltar? Or Tyrone Mears playing for Jamaica because he forgot which country his dad was actually from?

Good times, good times.

Who was the lad who played for Trinidad against England in 2006 but was from Surrey or some such?

Chris Birchall, team photo doesn't look odd at all

Didn't he come from the same part of England as David Beckham?

Or did I imagine that?

Anyway, good on the lad for getting a game at the World Cup

Was it Tony Cascarino who played for Ireland, but didn't have an Irish heritage whatsoever? Charlton just forced the paperwork through? lol

His wiki has this line, which makes me chuckle.

Birchall is affectionately known as 'Me Mum' by the Trinidad and TobagoSoca Warriors fans. This is because Birchall's response to a question about his right to play for Trinidad and Tobago was simply "me mum".

I know India are cricket mad, but I've always been surprised that football hasn't really taken off, given how you see a lot of Asian fans at football matches these days (eg I was at Stafford services recently, Man Utd were playing that evening and it was wall-to-wall Indian folk from the midlands in Utd shirts).

I think premier league football is reasonably popular in india (if not on a cricket scale) but like in a lot of countries that doesn't translate to the local game being popular and kids wanting to play it.

They get about 3-6,000 fans at the indian league games from a quick look on wiki. For a country of a billion, that's not a huge base to recruit talent from.

I bet the half-time food is the bizz though. Dash under the stands for a quick pint of Kingfisher and a keema naan, awesome.
