I follow football to regulate excess serotonin.
So, this. We have some serious jazz fans here, and it's time we had some fun. This will be peripatetic in nature and totally unpredictable in content. Welcome to volume 1 of the Restricted View Jazz Corner, titled:

Have Some Pepper With That.

So, Art Pepper. What a f$%kup, eh? Nevertheless, he was touched by God with something that's hard to put into words. That he and Getz should be such basically bad people, yet possess such an angelic sound (I always thought that Getz on alto would basically be Art) is another of God's great jokes, I suppose. I listen to Pepper in large doses, then have to cut myself off like a junkie. Appropriate, that. Anyway, watch this full screen in HD on a good monitor, plug in some excellent headphones, and welcome back to the time I was young and dumb. Ten plus minutes of pure seventies bliss. Pepper composed this tune in '63 when he was in San Quentin.

I never knew jazz was improvised til recently. Is it all?

Hey, my hats on fire. Why didn't you tell me?

I thought it was your look.

No it's not my look. Now I need to by a new hat.

That's the whole point.....varations on a theme, there is an original melody in there some where, if you haven't a wide knowledge of what tune is which going way back you mightn't spot it but it doesn't really matter just go with the flow.

great thread! quick question though...

Were Art Pepper and Stan Getz bad people really or were they just junkies? Jazz history isn't my strong point Mezz, please expand. I understand why jazz players and drugs go hand in hand, drugs help you escape the conscious mind and utilise the subconcious... when you manage to bypass the conscious you find yourself actually improvising instead of merely recycling "licks".

Hmm... Good question, beezer. Let me consider this and I'll have more to say tonight. I'm coding now, and can't focus on this right now. It'll be a long answer, though, most of which will explain why I'm no jazz player.

My jazz is pretty good but I do take a fair amount of drugs :)

Can you enlighten us on the lives of mr pepper and mr Getz? some of those old jazz dudes had crazy lives
